    Quiet Study & Cell Phones

In response to student complaints about noise and lack of adequate quiet study space, the College Library has designated the back of the 2nd and 3rd floors of SFL as quiet study areas. We encourage students to engage in group discussion at the open tables available on the 1st floor and in group study rooms at the front of the 3rd floor.

Please observe the following rules while in the Quiet Study areas:

    • Be considerate of others by helping to maintain a quiet atmosphere.
    • Loud or disruptive talking is not allowed, including on a cell phone. (The stairwells and the outside steps are good places for cell phone conversations.)
    • Portable music and video devices must be used with headphones.
Students should expect a certain amount of noise on the 1st floor - where we have computers, printers, reference service and circulation activity going on continuously. The backs of the 2nd and 3rd floors, however, are quiet areas, intended for study and reflection. We have to rely on students and other users of the building to make the policy work. That best happens by talking directly - in a polite and respectful way - to anyone who breaks the policy. In the event someone doesn't respond, please report the problem to staff at the Reference (Ask Me) or Circulation desks.

    Group Study Rooms

The back of the 1st floor of Shadek-Fackenthal features two new group study rooms (Fall 2006), with seating for up to 6 people in each. Additionally, there are 3 large study rooms on the third level, front of the library, each with seating for at least 12 people. You can reserve these rooms at the Circulation desk for up to 4 hours at a time. Group reservations supercede individual reservations, and you can make reservations up to 24 hours in advance.

    Food & Drink

Food and unsealed drinks are not permitted in the Library. Food attracts unwanted pests that find our books quite tasty. Unsealed drinks can easily spill on books and computing equipment. Please enjoy meals at Jazzman's, or on our porch steps.
