The GoPrint System
The GoPrint print management system is installed in several spaces around campus,
including both Libraries, the Harris Center's Innovation Zone, and the Life Sciences
building. Students can print normally from desktop computers, then review and choose to
release their jobs at the GoPrint release station next to the printer. Wireless printing is not
available. Printing charges are recorded by the GoPrint software, and added to tuition bills twice
a year by the Business Office.
The Fine Print
- Black & white printing costs $.04 per page for single-side print jobs, and $.02 per page for
double-sided print jobs. Color printing costs $.50 per page for single-side print jobs,
and $.25 per page for double-sided print jobs.
- Any accrued printing charges will appear on student bills twice per year.
- Library staff can check and adjust user balances. Adjustment is limited to print problems due
to hardware or software malfunction. Reimbursement forms are available at service desks in the
Libraries and the Innovation Zone.
- There is a 200 page limit per print job. There is no limit to how many jobs you can print, so
you can divide larger print jobs to meet the 200 page limit.
- Print jobs will EXPIRE (disappear) from the GoPrint Station after 2 hours. Clock begins when
print job is issued.
- Powerpoint files can print slowly, consider printing multiple frames per page, or choose
Outline.
- Double-sided print jobs save money and paper!
- Students printing Honors Theses or doing Hackman research can request credit for those print
jobs.
Sustainability
With the goal of reducing waste on campus in mind, here are some printing hints:
- Use simple filenames, with extensions, such as PsycPaper1.doc - filenames with symbols, spaces
and without extensions can confuse printers, resulting in blocked print queues and unhappy users.
- Print double sided whenever possible - it saves money and paper!
- Consider saving and reading PowerPoint presentations and PDFs onscreen whenever possible.
- If you have to print a PowerPoint document, make sure the background is light, and print
multiple slides per page. To adjust background color, choose Format, then Slide Background, click
on Color and choose Automatic. To print multiple slides, choose File, Print, click on Slides next
to Print What, and choose the number of slides per page.
Before GoPrint: Reducing Waste, Increasing Productivity
In 2004-2005, F&M students printed over 1.5 million sheets of paper at the libraries. This printing
environment became unsustainable. Recycling bins rapidly filled with mistakes and unclaimed print
jobs. Computers often couldn't handle print traffic and freeze, causing student and staff
frustration.
Starting with the Fall 2005 term, the Library and ITS installed the GoPrint print management
system. Users are now able to print any and all files normally at the computer, then proceed to
the GoPrint Station to either release or delete the print job.
GoPrint's Future
The Library and ITS staff will review GoPrint use after each term, to determine if any changes are
needed. Your kind patience is ALWAYS appreciated. Library and ITS staff will be available to answer
any questions and address any problems. You can also send ideas, comments or suggestions
anonymously to TELL US!
Thank you, and happy printing!
